The Story Behind Martyn’s Law: How One Mother’s Loss Championed Change for Many

Following the bombings at Manchester Arena in May 2017. Figen Murray, mother of boy, Martyn Hett who tragically lost his life set out on a journey to advocate for better security measures in such public spaces and events.
A former Detective Chief Superintendent, Nick Aldworth, joined forces with Figen, using decades of experience and expertise to draft a legislation for the cause. Banding together, they have put forward the ‘three Ps’, policy, politics and passion as the base of their campaign.
On RiskACUMEN Podcast of 5th December 2024, Figen and Nick talk through the journey of tragedy to championing this transformative action. Together, they discuss and outline Martyn’s Law and how they created the proposed legislation that was born from the devastating Manchester Arena bombing in 2017 and how this has or will implicate businesses, Charities, Not for Profit Organisations and public safety.
In short, Martyn’s Law proposes security requirements for public venues, to be categorised by capacity and to ensure readiness against potential terrorist threats. Within the podcast, Nick states “These measures won’t stop an attack, but they will make the outcome so much better than it could have been. “Following this bill, businesses, charities and not for profit organisations that are managing larger events and venues, will be required to adapt and comply with new standards. This includes lockdown procedures, information management and physical security measures.
