Typical Risks

  • Public Liability Insurance: It’s essential for Repair Cafés to have public liability insurance to protect against potential claims from service users who may sustain injuries during a session. We also recommend Employer Liability Insurance, which covers volunteers as well.
  • Third-Party Premises: If your Repair Café operates in a third-party venue, public liability insurance will also provide some protection if the property owner seeks compensation for any damage to the building.
  • Asset Insurance: Consider insurance for your Repair Café’s tools, equipment, and other assets to safeguard them as necessary.

Repair Cafe Insurance

A Repair Café is an organization that offers a space for individuals to gather and repair everyday items such as electronics, mechanical devices, computers, bicycles, and clothing. The goal of a Repair Café is to unite communities, help people fix broken items, save money, reduce waste, and cut carbon emissions.

There are currently over 140 active Repair Cafés across the UK, providing valuable social benefits to communities where issues like loneliness are prevalent, particularly among the elderly.

While the risk of something going wrong is minimal, it’s still important to have appropriate insurance coverage. In some cases, the third-party venue you’re using may require your group to have liability insurance in place.

At Ladbrook, we have organised cover for many Repair Cafes. As an independent provider, we will search for the best insurance quotes to ensure your café is properly covered. We are happy to discuss suitable insurance options and offer guidance and peace of mind to your organization.

If your Repair Café repairs white goods (e.g., dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, freezers), make sure to declare this, as many insurers do not cover these types of repairs. Additionally, we need to understand any Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) you carry out and ensure the individuals conducting these tests are properly qualified. Certain activities conducted by the group or volunteers may have exclusions, so it’s crucial to inform us about all activities to secure tailored insurance for your Repair Café.

For any information please do contact us for advice or to obtain a quotation from one of our dedicated account handlers on 01909 56 58 58 alternatively you can complete a quote form and our team will be in touch to discuss the charity’s needs.

Insurance for Voluntary Groups – Types of Coverage

Public Liability Insurance for voluntary groups protects against claims for injury or damage caused to the public. However, most insurers do not extend this coverage to volunteers.

To ensure volunteers are included under the same liability coverage, your group needs Employer Liability Insurance, even if you don’t employ staff. This covers volunteer-related risks as well.

Public liability insurance is often the primary coverage required for voluntary groups, but additional coverage may be needed depending on the group’s activities. For example, if your group provides advice, you might need a separate professional indemnity insurance policy, as public liability doesn’t typically cover advisory services.

We will work with you to identify the insurance cover that best suits your voluntary group’s needs and provide assistance in choosing the right coverage for your organization.

Customer Reviews

Charlotte has handled our insurance renewals for nine years now.  As a new Charity taking over a Community Library in 2015, it was scary navigating through compliance matter such as insurance.  Charlotte steered and helped us through in those early days and has been with us ever since.  She is always available; always responds in a timely manner and we never feel any question or query is silly.  She is a reassuring presence in our Operation.  We feel she goes the extra mile to understand our ever increasing financial and regulatory pressures of an entirely volunteer led Charity.
